Omarchy Is the Beginning

David Heinemeier Hansson, known online as DHH, the creator of Ruby on Rails released the newest version of Omarchy — Omarchy Quattro. I highly recommend watching the release video.

Omarchy is a curated Linux distro based on Arch, Hyprland, and Quickshell.

DHH's work on making a beautiful, weird Linux distro with the batteries included, in my view, will have a similar impact to the computing world as Ruby on Rails did. It cut all the annoying setup and allowed people to get to work. Devs will love this.

Omarchy won't stay in the realm of the programmers and nerds, though. I think it's the beginning of a revolution. I'm not the only one to see it. If you scroll X, you'll see others musing something similar. I think Omarchy is the beginning of the agentic operating system, one that can be fully controlled and manipulated by a person and their agent. Unlike Windows and macOS, Linux is not locked down in any way. Distros are assembled by people choosing the pieces of technology they want to use. This has made Linux very difficult for the average computer user to adopt. However, it is perfect for the Age of Agents, where your agent already understands all of the Linux ecosystem. And if you start from a curated base, like Omarchy, you have a usable, curated foundation on which to fully leverage your computer.

With Workroom, we're going to push the bounds of what this next generation of productivity tools looks like. Omarchy is the perfect foundation to build deep, highly productive, highly usable applications. We can touch any part of the system we want. We could use another Linux distro, but then we'd be responsible for doing this foundational work. That's a sidequest we don't want to take on.

Oh and DHH mused about doing a phone one day.

There is no other platform that is better suited for the type of applications I have in mind.

Workroom will be a Google Workspace or iCloud alternative for Omarchy. And the beautiful part of using Linux is no one is locked in. We can fully integrate with the OS and if people don't want it, they can not install it. For those who do want what we're going to deliver, we don't have to ask anyone's permission to do it.

Omarchy is the beginning of the agentic computer and Workroom is going all in.
